What is an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm?
An aneurysm is when a weakened part of a blood vessel expands like a balloon.
An aneurysm in the main blood vessel in the stomach area is called Abdominal
Aortic Aneurysm or AAA. AAA forms when part of the wall of the abdominal
aorta weakens. The weak wall expands like a balloon, the wall becomes
thinner and weaker. It may become so thin that it ruptures or bursts open.
Causes of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Here are some of the things that can weaken the aortic wall and lead to
AAA:
- A buildup of fat and other materials in the blood vessel,
which can form a hard substance called plaque on the aortic wall.
- Cigarette smoking
- High blood pressure
- Inflamation or irritation of the aortic wall
Diagnosing Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Your doctor will perform several tests to diagnose AAA which may include:
- CAT Scan/MRI-X-rays and pictures of your aorta
- Arterial Doppler Study-a measure of the blood flow
in your legs
- Arteriography-an x-ray image that shows the flow of
blood through the aorta and the arteries that branch off from it.
Surgery for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
During surgery for AAA the weakened aortic wall is replaced by a hollow
man-made tube called a graft,
usually made of strong fabric. The aneurysm is is opened and cleaned of
any blood clot. The best size graft is
chosen and attached to the aorta. The aortic wall is then wrapped around
the graft to protect it. The wall is sewn
up and the incision site is closed with suctures or staples.
